TEEN SURPRISE PARENTS

Since Storm Atkins at the age of 5 years made his appearance on the sports field in cricket, rugby, athletics and soccer field, the now 18-year-old young man from Lamberts Bay, has started to become a household name with his enormous talent.

He is currently a member of the Rugby Travel Academy in Pretoria, which competes under the banner of the Blue Bulls rugby union’s U/20 teams. The young man’s career on the sports field sounds like a fairy tale, because according to his father Sinclair Atkins, he has been shining on the sports fields since he was 7 years old.

DECISION – PARENTS DISAPPOINTED

Firstly, he has to fend for himself at the age of 18, without his parents with him, and his game on the rugby field has blossomed.  What further made us proud, was the feedback from Len Olivier and his coach Rassie Jansen van Vuuren .  As parents we support him 150% and like every parent, we want only the best for our child.  “We always motivate him to say, he does it for himself and not for others. Rugby currently means everything to him, and what he has achieved is all the glory to God.

In 2021, in 8th grade at High School Huguenot, the rugby bug really bit him, and we weren’t very happy about it.  Firstly because it is a contact sport, but a teacher and sports coach at Huguenot, Mr. Alwyn Burger satisfied us. He took our son under his wing and we resigned ourselves to that.

In the end, what makes him happy is what makes us happy.

STORM’S “FAIRY TALES” STORY SO FAR

He was already on a tour to France this year, which is already a blessing. And to be selected in the same year for a team that has to participate in a 7’s and 15-men code in Dubai, can only improve his experience on the rugby field. Storm completed his primary school career in 2018 at Lamberts Bay Primary school.  He was the head boy of the school in grade 7 and excelled academically as well as in sports.

In 2019, he begins his high school career at Huguenot High School in Wellington, with a full scholarship awarded to him. He is a keen sportsman and has practiced rugby, cricket and athletics in all age groups from grade 8 to 12. He was also the 100 and 200 m champion. The rugby bug completely took over him in 2021 and he was selected for Boland Central’s U/18 team.

In 2024 he will join the Rugby Travel Academy in Pretoria which competes under the banner of the Blue Bulls rugby union U/20.

In March 2024, he was selected to go with a group to France to gain Rugby experience. The costs involved amount to an amount of R50 000.00, which could be done through fundraising.

In June 2024 he was again selected to represent the Rugby Travel Academy South African International Rugby Team from 13 to 22 December 2024 at the World School Festival in Dubai.

To participate there, he must pay plus or minus R45 000.00.
