A Dream That Needs Support.

Leander Pholman, a young athlete with boundless potential, dreams of representing South Africa in the Olympic Games. However, as he stands at the crossroads of life after school, his future hangs in uncertainty due to financial constraints.

Leander, who graduated from Saldanha Bay Special School this year, has already proven himself as an exceptional athlete, excelling in track events and rugby. While he shines as a winger on the rugby field, his true passion lies in athletics. His hard work and dedication have seen him break records, win marathons, and dominate competitions across South Africa.

A Mother’s Concern
His mother, Lee-Andy, expressed her deep concern about the challenges Leander now faces. “My biggest fear is that he could go astray if he cannot continue participating in sports,” she said. “Without opportunities, many young people feel they are not good enough and fall into the wrong crowd, experimenting with drugs or alcohol. Leander needs to stay focused on his passion for athletics.”

During his school years, the family, with the help of the community, managed to cover the costs of his sports participation. But as Leander looks toward university, the financial burden seems insurmountable. “We are hopeful that someone—a sponsor or donor—will step forward to help Leander keep his dream alive,” Lee-Andy added.

A Proven Talent
Beyond his success in school competitions, Leander has competed in marathons and events outside the regular season, including notable victories at Groenpunt Stadium in Green Point. His outstanding athletic and academic performance demonstrates his potential as both an athlete and a role model.

The Role of WCSS
Leander’s family is now placing their hopes on West Coast Sports Solutions (WCSS), an organization that has successfully supported other young athletes, such as Abigail Fortuin, a two-time SA Elsen Schools Cross Country champion from Darling.

As chairperson of WCSS, I can only agree with his mother’s fears. Too many young, talented athletes are left behind after school because of a lack of resources. Without the necessary support, dreams fade, and opportunities are lost. On November 14, 2024, I met with members of the Human Rights Commission to discuss the alarming lack of sports programs at schools. This was followed by a meeting with Professor Jonathan Jansen on November 21, where the same concerns were highlighted.

A Call for Support
Leander’s future can change with the right support. A sponsor or donor could help him enroll at a university where he can continue his athletic journey and pursue his Olympic dream. His school results reflect his dedication, not just on the track but in the classroom as well.

If you are a businessman or organization willing to help this talented young athlete, please email admin@wcsportssolutions.co.za for further details. (No calls, please, to avoid scammers.)
