PRIDE OF THE WEST COAST

The Boland Senior Athletics Championships were held on the weekend of March 26 and 27th,  and the surprise of the weekend was the 17-year-old teen athlete from Langebaan.

Students from different universities and high schools participated in the championships at the Daljosafat stadium in Paarl.  Leander Pholman, who is spending his last academic year on the school benches, convincingly showed the seniors how it is done. It was especially his favorite 400 meter race, of which the South African Elsen Schools is the champion, which he won comfortably. With a time of 49.61 seconds,  he showed heels for Benir Rukera (Langebaan) who finished in second place in a time of 54.23 s.  Christian Von Durckheim  (SAC’s) was third, with a time of 55.03 seconds. Pholman is currently the Boland Senior champion, with a best time of 49.45 seconds

However, the South African School Champion came third in the 200 meters, with a time of 22.47 seconds.  Khumo Motheo Kotsedi (Maties) was first across the finish line in a time of 21.79, with Mikateko Makaringe (UCT) in second place with 22.29 seconds.

Leander is also a keen rugby playern, and plays winger in the 15 man code, and is also part of his school’s 7’s rugby team.  The teenager with his God-given talent is now preparing for the rugby season, while the Cross Country Athletics competition is also imminent.  According to Clive Cupido, Pholman’s coach, the teenager was born with the natural talent, and he only teaches Pholman the basics of athletics, and his dexterity.
