STRUGGLING TO GET VENUES – ATHLETIC

LANGEBAAN:- The Cross-Country season started on a high note, but ended tragically with the death of one of the sports stalwarts in the Upper West Coast community.

Ms Edith Januarie, died in a crashed accident just after the end of their first Cross Country league in Trawal.  According to Christopher Rogers, coach and manager of Langebaan Athletics Club, Ms Januarie died in an accident just after the end of their first Cross Country League in Trawal. “On behalf of our management and athletes of the club, we would like to express our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased and colleagues at Uitkyk Primary School in Lutzville”,  Rogers writes.

However, according to Rogers, the organizers are struggling to find suitable places for the Cross Country qualifying rounds on the west coast. “I’m still waiting for certain schools to return with possible good news, he said.” I am currently also negotiating with the SAS Academy (Saldanha) and the air force base in Langebaan Road, to host possible races there. Until then, it has been decided to hold the next league in Langebaan as well”.  “I’m very sorry for the inconvenience, but our leagues have to continue,” he added.  Rogers goes on and said, “we changed the  route from last weekend.  I will send you the information again as well as the results of the 1st league.Athletes from various schools on the west coast took part in the first leg of the qualifying races on Saturday, hoping to qualify for the South African Cross Country final competition in Rustenburg in September.

Six league races will be hosted in regions, with one completed on Saturday 7 May 2022 in Langebaan..  With us we will participate in 3 regions and it is Swartland, Lower West Coast and Upper West Coast each with its own coordinator.  Athletes must compete in 5 of the leagues to reach the West Coast team which then competes in the Boland XC Championships to reach the Boland team. The dates for the leagues are listed in the program as well as the Provincial and National meetings. Clubs and schools may participate.

Club athletes must have an ASA permanent license number, but school athletes do not need it.
Attached registration form is used and the registration fee is R15,00 per athlete. Attached program and age categories are compulsory. All results are sent to the Boland Athletics Office within 5 days after the league has been concluded. All cross-country trails are completed on Google Maps and sent to the Boland Athletics Office The selection criteria for Boland Schools and Boland Athletics Cross Country will be communicated.
